12 ways of gazing
video poem with voice-over
9’30’’
Trees grow through cracks in the concrete. Metal gates flap to the rhythm of banana leaves. It is morning in the colony, and there is comfort in things that are broken. A conversation with the island as spoken by a tormented and tormenting lover, 12 WAYS OF GAZING offers to look at colonial interdependencies, projections and destruction in the Francophone Caribbean. In this video piece, space can be read as an archive of relation, a registry of scars, abuses and resistances that becomes apparent through juxtaposition.
